Family Child Care Association Workshops

“Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the Child Care Setting” presented by Janice Stacey, President of Victoria Society for Children with Autism (VSCA) and Leslie Clark, Co-Director of VSCA, and both are mothers of children with ASD.

This talk focuses on techniques and strategies for helping children on the autism spectrum in a child care environment: making transitions easier, preventing meltdowns, understanding “stimming” behaviours, and avoiding sensory overload. Also covered are “red flags” that may indicate a child is on the spectrum, and how to talk to parents about this issue.

“Art Creativity with Young Children” presented by Emily Grav, The Paint Box   www.thepaintbox-victoria.com

Emily will demonstrate 3 different art projects that involve varied mixed media techniques that will excite, focus and encourage creativity in all children age 2 to 4 years old. Emily graduated from UVIC with an Honors BFA in Visual Arts in 2005. She gained extensive experience teaching art and ESL while living in Taiwan from 2007 to 2008 and also directed children’s Art camps here in Victoria. In September 2008, Emily opened  The Paint Box; a local art school in Fernwood, since then has been teaching visual arts to all ages. One of the most rewarding, and challenging age groups Emily teaches are 2 to 5 year old children. Her experience with this age group has lead her to create many mixed media projects that work on children’s concentration, creativity and fine motor skills.

Our workshops are held at North Douglas Pentecostal Church, 675 Jolly Place (Glanford/McKenzie area) and begin promptly at 7:15pm, doors open at 6:45pm.

We have the coffee pot on and we are trying to go green so if you could bring a mug it would be greatly appreciated. We have some new items on the fundraising table so come early and check them out!
